Athleisure has fast become a term and hit trend so wearable ranging from athletic or leisure pursuits to a more fashion forward and sophisticated sleek look. It has retailers and designers alike jumping aboard the trend in efforts to add this burgeoning market to their fashion repertoire including Louis Vuitton, Victoria’s Secret, Tory Burch, Rebecca Minkoff and H&M.
Don’t feel obligated to go all yoga pants with this athleisure trend though. It’s literally such a generalized term that you can consider a simple little black dress and some cool sneakers to be an athleisure look! The trick is to keep it simple, clean and modern with that sporty edge!
Here’s 7 Basic Guidelines for pulling off an Athleisure Outfit!
Sports Bra – wear a cute black sports bra under a sheer shirt for a fun and flirty sporty vibe. Make sure everything is covered appropriately. Finish off the look with sleek leggings and a bomber jacket.
Shoes – Be sure to focus on fashion over function. Choose a sporty pair of kicks that are either a great neutral classic (like my Adidas NMD Originals here) or a brightly colored two-toned pair (like my New Balance that I’ve featured before) either of which look great paired with almost anything! I’m loving casual cotton shirt dresses like the one featured for the hot summer months! Plus I can go from playdate to casual work lunch date or personal styling session, to date night with a simple change in shoes!
Leggings – Opt to wear a pair with cool sheer paneling or a fun print and easily top it off with a simple tank and leather or denim jacket or in the fall/winter throw on a chunky sweater. Wear some sporty shades for a cool downtown vibe. You could wear this trend by day with some awesome kicks or by night for downtown cool cocktails with some sleek heels!
Jewelry – should you dare keep it super minimal with cool metal pieces that are ultra modern and sporty – sleek. You don’t want anything over the top. (I opted to play in to my sort of boho-vibe tie-dye dress by layering on the feather necklace, but it’s still pretty minimal)
Accessories – You want your athletic look to remain the prime objective so keep everything else minimal and sleek such as a pair of mirrored aviators, a leather jacket or structured handbag. Your addition should have a sporty feel itself, don’t go for a fringe jacket or cat-eye feminine sunglasses.
When in Doubt Stick to Neutrals – If you’re in your 50’s or 60’s keep it super chic by sticking to neutrals instead of being too risky by wearing a loud color or print that might make too much of a statement. If you want to try a print, opt for a classic geometric print in black and white.
Dress for the Occasion – Don’t wear a sports bra and running shorts thinking it will pass for anything other than running… You can do better girl. Opt for leggings if you prefer a little more coverage for your caboose tie a long sleeve shirt or jacket around your waist or even pull out that trench vest that’s so on trend right now too! Athleisure trend wear can go almost anywhere, but leave those grungy workout shoes at home. You should still look pulled together not like you just got done with a marathon.
My mini and I enjoyed my coffee at Oddfellows in the Bishop Arts area in Dallas last week after our photo-shoot sessions! It’s been a while since I’ve been down there and I forgot what I’ve been missing. Theo loves to take a spoon and eat the foam off the top of my lattes lol… I think he managed to get more on his cute little skull and scorpion shirt than in his mouth this go around!
